Kaduna Government leads in harnessing AI for educational development, progress – Commissioner

The Kaduna State Commissioner of Education, Prof. Muhammad Bello, has said that the state is leading in harnessing Artificial Intelligence (AI) for educational development and progress.

Bello said this on Monday in Kaduna at a news conference to commemorate the International Day of Education.

The celebration had the theme: “AI and Education: Protecting Human Agency During a Wave of Automation”.

He said that the state government has made significant strides in integrating AI technologies into education, earning the state an award as the second runner up on ICT Human Capital Development at the 12th National Council on Communication and Digital Economy in 2024.

He mentioned key initiatives the state government had embarked upon which included procurement and distribution of computers to educational institutions, enhancing access to digital tools and AI-powered applications.

Bello added that internet connectivity has been prioritised through wireless routers and ViaSat internet, enabling students and teachers to leverage online learning platforms.

The commissioner also said solar-powered electricity was provided to some schools, ensuring uninterrupted learning activities and AI-powered systems.

“AI-driven simulations have been developed to enhance teaching and learning, offering interactive and immersive experiences.

“E-learning platforms with comprehensive Learning Management Systems have been implemented, providing students with access to educational materials,”he said.

Bello emphasised that the government recognises AI’s benefits in human capital development, including enhanced skills, knowledge, and innovation.

He, however, acknowledged potential risks, such as job displacement and decline in human agency.

Bello noted that “the government is thoughtful and has ethical approach to AI integration, ensuring technology complements human involvement in education”.

He expressed gratitude to partners for their support and collaboration in building a future where AI and human potential coexist.

A visit to a model smart school in Kinkinau, Kaduna South LGA of the state, showcased the successful integration of AI-powered learning tools, digital classrooms, and e-learning platforms, highlighting the state’s commitment to revolutionising education.

Also, stakeholders in the education sector stressed the need for people to understand and employ the use of AI in their activities.

They made the emphasis during a panel discussion and stakeholders and children engagement on AI integration in education, at the model smart school.

Earlier, the Director Planning, Kaduna State Ministry of Education, Salisu Lawal, reminded the gathering on the importance of protecting the human agency, creativity and critical thinking while leveraging on the benefits of AI.

Lawal, who was represented by Abbas Shehu, Deputy Director Planning, underscored the transformative power of education and its role in shaping the future of the younger ones.

He also emphasised the need for collaboration to ensure that the education systems prioritise the incorporation of AI.

In separate remarks,
some of the students expressed their happiness and readiness to incorporate the use of AI in their learning process.

Highpoints of the event included a questions and answers session, demonstration of robotic materials and simulation of AI.
