A Non governmental organisation, Asattahir International Foundation (AIF) has distributed relief materials on behalf of Danish Refugee Council (DRC) to 33,733 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Tangaza and Isa local government areas of Sokoto State as well as in Kaura Namoda and Zurmi local government areas of Zamfara in the last three months.
The distributed relief materials were funded by European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) and implemented by Danish Refugee Council through its implementing partner, Asattahir International Foundation (AIF) in Sokoto State.
The Chairman of the Foundation, Aliyu Sidi Attahiru in a statement made available to Daily Sun said, “The Foundation has on the 28th of April 2024 distributed relief items to 8,398 internally displaced persons across 1,584 households in Tangaza LGA. These IDPs are displaced largely as a result of the activities of Non-State Armed Groups (NSAG) within and outside their communities.
“The European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) funded project is implemented by Danish Refugee Council through its implementing partner Asattahir International Foundation (AIF) in Sokoto State.
“The items distributed to internally displaced persons in Tangaza LGA included Basic hygiene kits, Shelter Improved NFI kits and shelter rehabilitation kits. These include blankets, sleeping mats, jerry cans, pots, plates, bathing and washing soaps, mosquito nets, reusable sanitary pads, wrappers others include bundles of zinc, woods, nails, tarpaulins, Batten’s etc.
“The incidences of displacements in Sokoto state have continued to expose the affected populations particularly women and girls to unimaginable hardship and risks of human rights violations. With coordinated response to the plight of the affected populations, the teaming number of IDPs without any form of support will be greatly reduced.
“Also, on the 26th of May 2024, Asattahir International Foundation distributed relief items to 16,760 internally displaced persons across 4,190 households from Zurmi and Kaura Namoda LGAs, Zamfara state.
“The IDPs, in search for safety, moved to Kaura Namoda LGA largely due to the activities of Non-State Armed Groups (NSAG) in their communities.
“The items distributed to internally displaced persons in Kaura Namoda LGA included Basic Hygiene Kits, Non-Food Items and Shelter Rehabilitation Kits.
“These items include blankets, sleeping mats, jerry cans, pots, plates, bathing and washing soaps, mosquito nets, reusable sanitary pads, wrappers as well as bundles of zinc, woods, nails, tarpaulins, batten’s.
“The safety of lives and property in some parts of the state has continued to be undermined by the agonizing activities of non-satate armed groups in the state which greatly undermine peace, stability and the general well-being of the people. This has caused unbearable hardships among the locals.
“The distribution of these relief items to the IDPs in Kaura Namoda is part of AIF’s support to cushioning the shock and facilitating faster recovery from the setbacks being experienced by the IDPs in the course of their displacements.
“The programme is also a testament of DRC’s commitment to responding to the emergencies in the northwest through collaborations, partnerships with local and reputable organizations and stakeholders engagements.
“Again, on Thursday, 27th of June 2024, Asattahir International Foundation distributed relief items to 7,775 internally displaced persons across 1,600 households. The beneficiaries are mainly displaced persons from different parts of Sokoto East that sought refuge in Isa Town of Isa Local Government Area of Sokoto state. Most of the targeted beneficiaries are survivors of the activities of Non-state Armed Groups (NSAG) in the eastern part of Sokoto state.
“The items distributed to the beneficiaries included Basic Hygiene Kits and Non-Food Items.
“These items include, among other materials, blankets, sleeping mats, jerrycans, pots, plates, bathing and washing soaps, mosquito nets, reusable sanitary pads and plastic buckets.
“A total of 800 internally displaced households benefited from the hygiene kits, while 800 more benefitted from the non-food items.
“The safety of lives and property in some parts of the state, particularly in the eastern part of the has been undermined by the agonizing activities of non-satate armed groups, which greatly undermine peace, stability and the general well-being of the people.
“Isa LGA is increasingly recording more incidences of displacements as a result of the activities of the Non-State Armed Groups (NSAGs), which expose women, girls, and children to greater protection risks.
“The distribution of these relief items to the IDPs in Isa LGA is part of AIF’s commitment and openness to collaborate with local and multinational humanitarian outfits with the aim of cushioning the shocks associated with displacements and facilitating faster recovery by the IDPs in the course of their displacements.
“These interventions are testament of DRC’s commitment to responding to the emergencies in the northwest through collaborations and partnerships with local and reputable organizations”. The statement said.
