The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), has renewed their call for the resignation of Controller General (CG) of the Nigerian Customs Service, Adewale Adeniyi over Lagos Stampede, describing it as sacrosanct.
Isah Abubakar,
National President of the NYCN, made the call in a statement issued to newsmen on Tuesday in kaduna.
He said the NYCN deemed it fit to call for the resignation of the Customs CG over the death of seven people during the sale of seized contraband rice in Lagos.
Abubakar described the incident as disheartening, adding that a supposed to be responsible agency like the Nigeria Customs Service was not supposed to be selling contraband and an unhealthy rice to innocent Nigerians.
“The same rice that was initially banned from coming into Nigeria as it has been confirmed to cause colon cancer being sold to Nigerias is uncalled for.
“Mr Adewale cared less for the well-being and lives of the poor masses, this we see as grossly insulting.
“Your cannot cause the death of lives that are equal to you and act as if nothing happened.
“Some of these people killed are the bread winners of their families, running around daily to provide for their families same as you do, yet you truncate their lives and made their wives widows and their children orphans without showing any remorse, claiming you have backing from the top,”he lamented.
The NYCN President said if the customs boss can comfortably supervise such act of inhumanity that led to the loss of lives of innocent Nigerians in broad daylight, then he is worse than boko haramthat hides and launch attacks at night.
“It is clear that Mr Adewale has no regards for the lives of the poor Nigerians.
“With this, we question his sense of humanity and condemn his lack of remorse for the lives lost. We call on President Tinubu to as a matter of National Interest bring the Customs boss to order, so as to clear the presumption that it is because of his relationship with him that he is acting untouchable and a mini-god.
“We at the NYCN remain resolute and un-intimidated with his relationship to the President and as such call for his immediate resignation over incompetency.
“He should save the face of the renewed hope agenda because it centres around the protection of lives, and improving the wellbeing of Nigerians. He should peacefully and quietly resign, because this singular act has exposed his gross incompetence,”the NYCN President added.
He appreciated the encouraging responses of different groups across the country calling to go to the streets and demand the resignation of the Custom Boss and others who signaled their intentions to hold simultaneous candle light vigil at different Custom’s command across the country in memory to the lives of compatriots lost.
He disclosed that while preparations are ongoing for the candle light vigil infront of Custom Headquarters, they are calling on aggrieved Nigerians, fellow compatriots, to come out in mass in memory of those who lost their lives to join them and protest in the morning before similar customs Commands across the country.
“While we pass our deep and sincere condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of the deceased, we call on Nigerians to come out in large numbers and join us, as we match in solidarity to demand justice for the souls or our lost compatriots.
“Our last words are for the the Custom boss to resign now, to avoid been the cause of a revolution against the renewed hope regime under the leadership of President Asiwaju Bola Tinubu,”he said.
