The Director General (DG) of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig.-Gen. Yusha’u Ahmed, has in a maiden visit to Kaduna orientation camp on Sartuday, harped on unauthorised journeys by corps members, stressing that it could undermine their security.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the Kaduna visit by the DG was his first, after assumption to his office on Jan. 30.
Addressing the 2023 Batch “A” stream “I” corps members who were currently on orientation at the temporary orientation camp at Government College, Kurmin Mashi Kaduna, the DG said that unauthorised journeys attracts sanctions as enshrined in the scheme’s acts.
He noted that his administration would continue to ensure that all corps members enjoy improved welfare and security.
The DG stressed that the contents of the NYSC Bye-Laws would be applied on every infraction, adding that corps members must conduct themselves within the provisions of the law.
“It is a thing of pride to serve your fatherland, but don’t risk your lives by unauthorised journeys. Be disciplined and prayerful. Also be confident of yourselves, do your work diligently and i assure you, nothing will happen to you.
Avoid crime, obey the rules and regulations in the camp, and respect your leaders”, the DG urged.
Speaking further, Ahmed specifically warned the corps members not to indulge themselves in political arguments, but rather participate as unbiased electoral officers, by taking cognisance of the electoral laws during the forthcoming 2023 general elections.
He also warned them against posting the camp activities on social media, urging them to forward their complains to the management of the scheme.
The NYSC Chief Executive also advised the corps members to ensure that they leave good legacies in their place of primary assignments and host communities.
Earlier giving camp situation report to the DG, the State’s Coodinator of NYSC, Mr Agbor Obim, said a total of 1,077 Corps Members comprising 407 males and 679 females were registered in camp.
He said the corps members were participating fully in camp activities, while enumerating some of the challenges confronting the orientation camp to include high cost of goods and services, hike of fuel price, inadequate accommodation among others.
NAN reports that the DG, presented a Cow to the corps members for their meals, 200 plastic chairs and 10 standing fan to the Kaduna orientation camp.
Highpoint of the event were also a visit to the orientation camp clinic, hostels, and display of cultural dance by the corps members.
Also part of activities for the maiden visit to the state, the DG visited the three corps cembers on admission at the 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Kaduna.
The corps members on admission at the hospital, were deployed, and on transit from Yobe to Anambra State for their orientation course, they had a ghastly motor accident in Kaduna.
The DG prayed for their quick recovery, while he commended the hospital management for the timely response made available for the injured corps members.
Earlier welcoming the DG to the hospital on behalf of the Chief Medical Director, the Administrative Officer of the hospital, Maj. OS Ojo, promised the hospital’s readiness to offer the best medicare for the injured Corps Members.(NAN)
